The River Center
Solo Class Project        Typography + Layout
For this class project I was given a list of requirements that had to be included in a preforming arts brochure along with accompanying photos and text. There were no requirements for the visual identity or structure of the brochure.

Determining User Needs

Julianna Beck

Student at CSU

About Julianna:

Julianna is currently a clarinet student at CSU. Although not from Columbus, she does enjoy what the town has to offer, particularity the events at the River Center. Because of her major she has to attend many of the musical events for class credit, but she does enjoy attending. She prefers it when the center offers musical performances that are new and modern, not just old classics.

“I am thrilled when I see live performances of people I have followed on-line for years. I didn’t think that the River Center would have so many performers that are on the forefront of modern music”
Student at Columbus State University

Evan Wells

Retiree in Columbus Georgia

About Evan:

Benjamin spent the majority of his professional life in Columbus and is now in his golden years. Long being a supporter of the Arts, he visits the River Center often. Whenever a friend is in town he wants to show off the town that he loves.

“I want to be able to enjoy what the River Center has to offer, and know that the center is offering world class performers and shows.”
The Personas of Julianna and Evan reveals the needs of the people who visit the River Center. The Center should aim to create an environment that is welcoming to artistic expression while also maintaining professionalism.

Ideation
Knowing the tone that I wanted to set in the brochure, I started to experiment with different layouts. As a starting point I began with a common layout of a full bleed image that took up most of the spread. Then I started to experiment with how to incorporate creativity tonally. I established the motif of combining rounded edges and colored circles with thin lines that travel throughout the spread. These lines help ground the design by balancing out the rounded elements, solving the issue of combining artistic expression while maintaining professionalism.
03
Refinement
A Challenge that arose was how to incorporate secondary information into the spreads that supported the established visual identity.
